So, What is Smart Home Tech?

Whether it be through our personal choice, moving to new build homes with integrated technology, or through government legislation to support energy efficiency, at some point we will all experience Smart Technology. The more we look for ways to to simplify our home living, save money and make it more efficient, the more companies react and invest in innovation to solve problems for us.
  • A smart home definition adopted by Deprtment for Trade and Industry is “A dwelling incorporating a communications network that connects the key electrical appliances and services, and allows them to be remotely controlled, monitored or accessed.”

The DTI also says for a home to be "smart" it needs to have:

    1. Internal network – wire, cable, wireless

    2. Intelligent control – gateway to manage the systems

    3. Home automation – products within the homes and links to services and systems outside the home

More smart home products are being developed everyday by companies like Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft.  Billions of dollars are being invested into research, development, and marketing, with each manufacturer trying to convince you that their ecosystem is the best one. In our experience there isn't a single ecosystem or infrastructure that is best, but often individual solutions that perform better and offer more functionality than others.

A client may see that it is a combination of speakers from Sonos, Thermostat from Tado, Doorbell from Nest, lights from Phillips Hue and security camera from Netatmo provide an extremely capable, user-friendly experience that suits their needs, but everyone is different.

Smarter Home Electrics can help you understand what is best for you, so your investment into new products and systems are based on informed decisions - potentially saving you a lot of money wasted through trial and error.

In the future we will see a wide range of products and services that fully integrate with any of the existing ones in your home, but until then it can be very difficult to integrate different products and get them to work in a useful way, rather than becoming a hinderance for you.
